Posted on August 19, 2020

With the NFL season just weeks away, gaming titan DraftKings knows fans are excited. One entrant may win a cool million just by joining the Week 1 Survivor pool, as part of the company’s $100 million “Golden Ticket” giveaway.

DraftKings’ promotion comes to a couple of weeks after rival FanDuel doled out $81 million to fans in site credits and other giveaways. The total value is the largest since sports betting expanded two years ago.

All players entering the Survivor contest will receive a prize, ranging from $5 in DK Dollars to $25,000 cash.

One entrant to the Pick’Em contest will be selected for the million-dollar prize. Each week, pick a different team (each team may only be used once per season) to compete for a $1 million top prize.

DK’s Head of Sportsbook Johnny Avello said the giveaway allows players who don’t live in sports betting states a chance to get some freeroll action. The company has done a lot of free pools and unique content during the months without traditional sports.

“We want to do something big that encompasses all states,” Avello said Tuesday. “We wanted to give everyone an opportunity to see what DraftKings is all about.”

Week 1 is usually a big deal for NFL bettors and DFS players. Currently, DraftKings Sportsbook has three contests running with multi-million dollar prize pools. The rewards range from 5 to 500 DK Dollars, which means everyone will get at least the entry fee to the Sunday Millionaire with $5 million in prizes.

The early raffle means some players might win the prize despite getting bounced early from the survivor pool. Don’t worry if your pick comes up small. Avello claims the early action is the hardest to predict.

“Week 1 [and] 2 are usually the toughest because you see a lot of upsets because teams just aren’t acclimated yet,” he said.

“This year, without the preseason they’re really not gonna be acclimated. It’s going to make more difficult the first couple of weeks.”

Sportsbooks have started producing prices for Week 1 action once the schedule gets released in April. For oddsmakers like Avello, those prices aren’t likely to change much now, given the teams will enter play without a snap of preseason action or even joint practices.

“These numbers just sit around,” Avello said of the spreads and totals for Week 1 action, citing other sports drawing bettors’ attention.”

“It’s interesting how preseason is not only preseason for the players, it’s a chance for not only them to get going in the league but it’s a chance for bookmakers to get used to booking NFL again, changing the odds, changing the season totals, based on what we were seeing. We don’t have that opportunity this year.”

In terms of the handle of games, Avello says a majority comes in on the week before the games, following the announcement of final rosters. For those fortunate enough to live in a state where DraftKings is available for betting, the site did a “no vig” on Week 1 action last year, eliminating any gap between prices for the lines or total bets.

The site also announced Tuesday the Pro Football Pick’Em season-long pool will be available to account holders in West Virginia, making it the third state eligible for the $1 million (or more) top prize by picking five games a week for 14 weeks against the spread.
