College Bowl Games – Wagers & Bets

With so many different college football bowl games, there are plenty of opportunities to make some serious cash betting on the sport at this time of the year.

‘Before you get started, it’s important to understand the different types of wagers available as well as the different bowl games. Here is a closer look at those details.

College Football Money Line

The first and most obvious type of sports betting wager during bowl season is the money line, which refers to picking outright winners straight up. All you need to do when placing this type of wager is pick a team that you think will win and then bet a certain amount of money on them to deliver.

College bowl odds can vary depending on the team that you are betting on so it’s important to factor those odds in to your decisions. For example, you might see a matchup that looks like this during bowl season:

Arizona +180

LSU -200

In this situation, LSU is the sports betting favorite at -200 odds. This means that if you bet on the Tigers you need to risk $200 in order to win $100. At the same time, Arizona is listed as a +180 underdog.

This means that if you bet on the Wildcats, you could risk $100 to win $180. All you need to do to win in this scenario is pick the team that will win the bowl game outright.

College Football Point Spread Bets

Another betting option you could choose is the point spread, which refers to picking a team to win a bowl game by a specific margin of victory as specified by the individual sportsbooks. Here is an example of what that might look like:

Michigan State +5.5

Stanford -5.5

In this hypothetical bowl game matchup, Stanford is the sports betting favorite at -5.5. This means that the Cardinal would need to win the matchup by six points or more in order to be considered a point spread winner.

At the same time, Michigan State is listed as the sports betting underdog at +5.5. This means that if the Spartans win outright or lose by five points or less, Michigan State will cover the point spread.

Totals or Over/Under Bets on NCAA Football

The total refers to another type of wager in which you bet on the combined number of points the teams competing in a bowl game score, regardless of which team wins the game outright or covers the college bowl odds point spread. Here is an example of what a total might look like during bowl season.

Miami Hurricanes vs. USC Trojans

Total: 51.5

In this hypothetical bowl game matchup, the total has been set at 51.5 points. If the Hurricanes and Trojans combined for 52 points or more, then the “OVER” would be considered the winning result since it’s more than 51.5 points.

At the same time, if Miami and US combined for 51 points or fewer than the “UNDER” would be considered the winning result. It doesn’t matter which team wins or which team covers the spread.

All that matters is the total number of points the teams score in the game.

College Bowl 2021-2022 Futures Bets

Another type of wager you might see during bowl season is the futures bet. A futures bet is any type of wager that involves betting on a potential outcome that won’t be learned until well down the road. Example of a futures bet include everything from which team will reach the National Championship Game to which team will ultimately win a national title.

College Bowl Odds – Prop Bets (Propositions)

Prop bets are any types of wagers that pertain to specific individual or team performances regardless of the final scores of the actual games.

For example, betting on the number of touchdowns a quarterback will throw in a bowl game or the number of rushing yards a running back will register in a particular game are both considered prop bets based on individual performances.

At the same time, if you were to bet on the number of touchdowns a team scores in a game or the number of field goals they successfully make then those are considered prop bets based on team performances.

Prop bets are a fun way to add to the entertainment value of a game with an opportunity to make some serious cash without having to worry about the final score of any given contest.

 NCAA Bowl Parlays

The final type of wager we will look at here is the parlay. A parlay is any wager ticket in which you combine multiple individual bets on one ticket. For example, if you took multiple teams to win bowl games via the point spread on the same ticket, then that would be a parlay.

In order for a parlay to be considered a winner, each team selected on that ticket must win. Since you are combining multiple picks on the same ticket, you will receive a higher potential cash payout if the parlay ticket is a winner. Here is a look at what a potential parlay ticket might look like:

Alabama -3.5 vs. Ohio State

Clemson -4.5 vs. Auburn

 Risk: $5 to win $20

  • In this example, the sports betting fan is taking both Alabama and Clemson to cover the point spread on a parlay ticket.
  • They are wagering $5 to win $20.
  • In order for the ticket to be considered a winner, the Crimson Tide and Tigers both need to cover the point spread.
  • If one or both teams lose, then the parlay ticket is considered a loser.

3 College Bowl Betting Tips & Odds

  1. Take Momentum Into Account

Momentum is a huge factor when you’re handicapping bowl games. Take a look at how teams finished the season to get an idea of where they are at.

For example, if a team won its final five games of the season, that indicates that they’re clicking at the right time. On the other hand, if a team started well but barely made it to the finish line, losing four of their final five games, that suggests that something is not working.

Tracking momentum is a big key to success in terms of betting college bowl season.

  1. Does A Team Care About The Game?

Many schools have different feelings about the different bowls. Big schools who contend for the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl each year won’t really be that excited if they’re stuck in a mid-level bowl game in mid-December.

However, a small school that rarely goes bowling might be really excited for that very same contest.

Another example is teams who miss out on their goals and get placed in a lower bowl. For example, a team who feels they should be in the Top 4 and playing in the College Football Playoff, but they instead get placed into a lesser bowl.

They might be disappointed and play accordingly. We saw as much when a very good Georgia team just missed out on the College Football Playoff in 2019 and then lost handily to Texas in the Sugar Bowl.

  1. Where Is The Game Being Played?

One thing to keep in mind when looking at the college bowl odds is the location of the game. That means teams are not often used to the stadiums where the games are played. Some bowls might be outdoors in wintery conditions and some might be outdoors in warm spots (Caribbean or Hawaii). Teams might not be used to that in December too.

Another point here is which set of fans will be more present. For example, if the Texas Longhorns are playing in a bowl game in Texas, they might not be at their home stadium in Austin, but their fans don’t have to travel that far to be there.

If they’re playing someone like Ohio State, that’s much further for the Buckeyes fans to make the trip. Having a partisan crowd can help cheer a team to victory, so track the locations of the games as well.
